On the page, visitors can choose between reading the story of a Khmer Rouge midwife, getting advice on how to testify at the upcoming Khmer Rouge tribunal, or learning more about criminal cases in East Timor.

Welcome to the Khmer Rouge Trial Web Portal at www.krtrial.info, the new Khmer-language Web site that Open Forum of Cambodia director Houth Ratanak hopes will become the Internet’s largest online Khmer Rouge library.

“Cambodian people have difficulty accessing information on the Khmer Rouge [online] because it’s not all together,” Houth Ratanak said Thursday, the day the Web site was officially launched. “This will provide all the information about the Khmer Rouge.”

It took the Open Forum staff one year to develop the Web site as a pilot project, on a grant of roughly $40,000 from the US-funded NGO Open Society Initiative. The site may be expanded into English next year.

Project coordinator Poun Sohay said the hardest part was getting permission from NGOs, the government, UN and media organizations to reproduce articles and information at the site.

“It was very difficult,” he said. “Some information about the Khmer Rouge is very sensitive and it was difficult to collect and put on the Web site.” Poun Sohay acknowledged that most Cambodians in the country will not be able to visit the Web site, but was hopeful it will be useful to those who can. “I think it’s very important for Cambodian people locally and especially outside the country,” he said.
